Kids May Know Best.

Have you ever noticed that little blur running around your house?  Ever notice how fit that little blur is?  Their secret is rather obvious, they NEVER stop moving.  So why don't we incorporate the same idea into our workouts.   We always say we never have time, the truth is we do – we just need to change the way we approach exercise.

After having my third son I realized that I really had to work hard to fit in exercise, and as a result I started to get frustrated. I realized I had to make a change or I was going to go nuts.  So now I work in short workouts throughout the day.  I typically do a quick 30 minute run in the morning while the boys eat their breakfast, work in Katie's Downtime Exercises, and then at night after they go to bed, I do something simple like weights or yoga.  To get the most impact from these quick little workouts, I focus on working the largest muscles in the body, (quads, gluts, core) at a very high intensity.  The point is to get the most impact in the short timeframe.

We also need to keep it fun, always use exercise not only as a means of staying fit but happy as well.  One relaxing thing that I have recently started is a quick swim while my two older boys are in their swimming class.  I pop the baby in a floaty and keep him in front of me like a kickboard and off we go swimming from one of the pool to the other.  The baby loves it.  Since I'm hoping to do a triathalon with Katie, I use it as a means of working on my breathing as well as improving my kick.  On the weekends I try to do longer, more intense workouts but I tend to enjoy them more now that I'm NOT thinking about the exercise I didn't do earlier in the week.   Just remember, as things get more complicated all you need to do is simplify.
